The Windy & Darling Mysteries
Think you know Treetonshire? Think again. Beneath picture-postcard villages, ancient cobblestones, and rolling countryside lies a fertile breeding ground for deception, secrets, and scandal.
While our stories borrow some of the charm found in traditional cosy mysteries, they’re far from quaint for the sake of it. We favour a spirited blend of mystery, humour, social observation, satire, and often, though not always, bizarre murders. The result? A series balancing warmth with intrigue that never forgets the mechanics of a mystery should entertain and keep readers guessing.
To create the perfect stage for villainy, the first Windy & Darling Mystery Series unfolds in fictional, historic Treetonshire County (Treet), focusing on Linkville—eight idyllic rural villages nestled within—and Treeton, Treet’s bustling county town. Here, appearances deceive, gossip travels faster than facts, and danger often lurks behind a beguiling smile and friendly wave.
Blending classic whodunnits with sharp humour, social observation, and a healthy dose of chaos, beneath the picturesque surface, amid a hidden hotbed of dodgy deeds and dodgier characters, prowl greed, resentment, fear, and dark motives. Yet we never dwell on misery. Instead, our narratives follow the driven, often awkward, and unconventional investigations of Jon “Windy” Windup and Wendy “Darling” May, two amateur sleuths digging beneath the charming surface of village life, determined to right wrongs their own way. Among pretty thatched roofs and crooked lanes, the odd pair meet and greet a bunch of curiosities and a timbale of trickery. Armed with whimsies and a talent for sparring, Windy & Darling are the heartbeat of our stories. The real mystery is their friendship.
Whether looking for clues, digging the dirt, or honing their snooping skills, our madcap meddlers seek to right wrongs and unglove fiendish, murderous hands in bucolic bliss. Our stories feature memorable characters, tangled motives, and suspects aplenty, and while the police may prove helpful, they’re outmanoeuvred by a pair of curious civilians with sharp instincts and stubborn streaks. With Deadly Dough and its successor, Fatal Fungus, we’ve worked to honour the traditions of popular cosy mystery while giving the books a fresh, contemporary twist. The stories contain warmth, but also tension, danger, and social bite, while our offbeat protagonists are supported by casts equally so. We keep twee sentimentality on a short leash and humour but a giggle away.
